Community as Classroom
Overview: Learn how action civics engages students in problem solving in their communities. The HiP Innovation Academy will show how to connect subject matter to the places students live and the issues that matter most by virtually immersing participants in various communities near and far. The culmination of the HiP Innovation Academy will be the fourth annual Cobb Project Soapbox showcase in the Spring.
Audience: Schools interested in developing interdisciplinary, community-based learning opportunities for their students in their communities. This academy is open to educators new to HiP as well as those who participated in previous HiP Innovation Academies.
- This year we will offer two cohorts: one for teachers new to HiP (101), and a leadership cohort (201) for teachers who have participated in previous HiP Academies.
- Participants will meet virtually in this innovative professional learning experience.
- The HiP Innovation Academy is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Social Studies, English Language Arts, Fine Arts, World Languages, and ESOL departments.

HiP 101 - Getting Started Cohort for new HiPsters or those needing a refresher
HiP 201 - Leading for Humanity Cohort for veteran HiPsters supporting and growing HiP in their schools

Academy Design: All educators in grades K-12 forming at least 3-4 member teams representing multiple subject areas. Academic coaches and administrators are highly encouraged to attend as well.
- DAY 1 The Power of PLACE - How can you use a place, such as downtown Marietta, to connect student learning experiences to the community, leverage local resources, and make cross-curricular connections?
- DAY 2 The Power of PEOPLE - How can you engage in an interactive discussion with community members to identify ways to work collaboratively on projects?
- DAY 3 The Power of PASSION - How can you use your strengths and passions to apply asset-based thinking in your classroom to improve student self-efficacy and performance?
- DAY 4 The Power of PROTOTYPE - How can you connect place, people, and passion to create relevant learning experiences for students and develop a sustainable plan that will transform your classroom and community in the coming years?
Dates: Participants are expected to attend all 4 academy dates. Substitutes will be paid for by the district for all four days.
